But today, even medievals and westerns aren’t as big. Which, uhhhh I think is very present with every other era of England that remains popular in historical romance today, but-it’s something I think writers and publishers are more aware of now. ![]() Personally I like dubcon, but big traditional publishers stay away from it generally these days consider how many times the hero rapes the heroine in Fires of Winter (a book that shaped me).Īnd then with pirates, you’ve also got the connections to the slave trade. It’s very hard to get into the kink of pirate or viking romances without getting into stuff that isn’t acceptable in the mainstream anymore. Honestly? Most historical subgenres that aren’t regency or Victorian (which IMO a lot of readers conflate with regency) don’t get a lot of mainstream play anymore. ![]()
